This is the Porsche 911 Speedster. This swoopy, two door roadster is what the Stuttgart marque describes as an “excellent present’ to itself to celebrate its 70th anniversary of building sports cars. The Speedster’s styling takes cues from the original 356 Speedster from 1948, brought up to date with modern materials. The wide body shape is derived from the 911 Carrera 4, albeit with a chopped roof featuring a lower, shallower windscreen. The ‘double bubble’ hump at the rear is crafted from carbon fibre and covers the roll over protection. The front wings and bonnet are finished in the same lightweight material. • Best sports cars on sale 2018Other cosmetic features – for example the silver and white paint scheme, bullet-style door mirrors and chrome fuel filler cap mounted the centre of the bonnet – draw inspiration from the brand’s early racing cars. The look is completed with a set of 21-inch Fuchs-style centerlock wheels. The lightweight theme continues inside. The Speedster ditches the air conditioning and infotainment systems to trim a few extra grammes, while the driver and passenger are held in place by a pair of carbon-backed bucket seats.Under the skin, the Speedster borrows heavily from the 911 GT3. Power comes from the same 4.0-litre flat-six, offering 493bhp and a heady 9,000rpm red line. It’s transmitted to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, and the exhaust is finished with GT3 RS-style titanium tips. Likewise, the braking and chassis components are identical to the GT3.Though officially just a concept at the moment, Porsche is seriously considering the Speedster for series production. Though without a roof – you only get a small tonneau cover to keep the rain out when it’s parked – the UK might not be its ideal habitat.
